Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) or Sriharikota Range (SHAR) located in a spindle-shaped barrier island on the east coast of Andhra Pradesh, SDSC is a rocket launch centre operated by ISRO since 1969. Satish Dhawan Space Centre is named on the former ISRO chairman Satish Dhawan. This island is affected by both south-westerly and north-easterly monsoons, thus many clear days are available for outdoor static tests and launchings. October 2008. India's first Mars orbiter Mangalyaan was launched from the centre on November 5, 2013, which was successfully placed into Mars orbit on 24 Sep 2014.
