Every data sufficiency consist of some basic information and related question some followed by statement which gives us some information which may or may not help us answer the question . The main question of data sufficiency is on finding out whether the information contain in the statement are sufficient to answer the question asked. Accordingly one has to mark the answer based on the given option.
Types of Instruction
one of the typical variations introduced in data sufficiency question is by changing the way option have to be marked .The following two option scheme are the most commonly used in data sufficiency question .
Option scheme one :
1. As your answer ,if statement A alone is sufficient to answer the question .
2. As your answer ,if statement B alone is sufficient to answer the question.
3. As your answer , if both the statement are required to answer the question.
4. As your answer ,if the question cannot be answered even by using both the statement is correct.
Option scheme Two :
1. As your answer ,if statement A alone as well as statement B alone is sufficient to answer the question asked.
2. As your answer,if both the statement A and B are required to answer the question asked.
3. As your answer,if any of the statement A or B is sufficient to answer the question asked but both individually are not correct.
4. as your answer, if the question cannot be answered even by using both statements together.
Examples of Data Sufficiency Questions
Let us start straightaway with examples so that you can understand what Data Sufficiency means.
For each of the following questions mark:
(A) If you can get the answer from (1) ALONE but not from (2) alone
(B) If you can get the answer from (2) ALONE but not from (1) alone
(C) If you can get the answer from BOTH (1) and (2) TOGETHER but not from (1) alone or (2) alone
(D) If EITHER statement (1) ALONE OR statement (2) ALONE suffices
(E) If you CANNOT get the answer from statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER but need more data
1.Did the price of power rise last year?
(1) If the price of power rose last year, then the price of petrol would rise this year.
(2) The price of petrol rose this year.
Solution: (E); Statements (1) and (2) are not sufficient. The price of petrol could rise for other reasons besides the price of power rising.
2.Is x an odd integer?
(1) X is divisible by 7.
(2) The square root of x is an integer divisible by 7.
Solution: (E); Statement (1) is insufficient since 21 (which is odd) and 28 (which is even) are both divisible by 7.
Statement (2) is also insufficient since and are both divisible by 7. Both 196 and 441 are divisible by 7, so (1) and (2) together are still insufficient.
Process of Solving Data Sufficiency Questions
The three data sets to be considered while solving a question:
As seen above every question in Data Sufficiency has a question statement (which might or might not contain information about the question asked), followed by tow statements (viz. Statement A and Statement B) containing information which is related to the question asked.
In order to test which option to mark you need to consider three data sets to solve the question.
While considering any Data Set in this manner your only focus should be on whether you can get an answer to the question or not.
