An apprentice is someone who learns how to do a particular job under the tutelage of someone skilled in the field. While many apprenticeships exist within the building trades, it’s possible to find apprenticeship training in a variety of other skilled professions, as well. An apprenticeship program is different from a trade school because the apprentice usually receives pay during his training period. An apprentice must be at least 16 years old. In order to work in a hazardous occupation, the apprentice must be at least 18 years old. Depending on the trade, the apprentice may need to meet basic education requirements, such as a high school diploma or a GED. Some applicants must be able to prove they can physically do the work before gaining acceptance into an apprenticeship program. In other cases, applicants must pass aptitude tests, interviews and show previous work experience on a resume. The specific role of an apprentice varies by job. The apprentice must show an interest in learning all aspects of the chosen trade. In all situations, an apprentice must work safely and consider the safety of his coworkers. Work attendance and classroom training should be high priorities. An apprentice must learn and follow all rules established by his employer. While an apprentice typically keeps the same work schedule as his trainer or mentor, class work and homework is done after work hours. During the apprenticeship period, the trainee earns wages that increase with his skills. The apprentice can earn up to 60 percent of the full salary of a skilled worker.
